10 Ways to Save Money While Traveling: ABT Global Travel Tips

Advisor helping travelers plan a trip on a budget

Traveling well doesn’t have to mean overspending. These are the strategies our advisors use every day to get clients more value from every trip, whether it’s a quarterly sales tour or a family vacation.

  1. Be flexible with dates. Moving a departure by a day or two, especially to a Tuesday or Wednesday, can lower airfare noticeably. Compare a full week of fares before you commit.
  2. Book at the right time. For domestic flights, the best fares usually appear one to three months out. For international trips, start watching two to six months ahead.
  3. Focus on one loyalty program. Concentrating flights with one airline alliance and stays with one hotel group earns status faster, and status brings free upgrades, lounge access and waived fees.
  4. Travel in shoulder season. The weeks just before and after peak season offer good weather, smaller crowds and lower hotel rates.
  5. Pack carry-on only. Avoiding checked-bag fees on every leg adds up quickly, and you’ll never wait at baggage claim.
  6. Ask about inclusions. Breakfast, Wi-Fi, parking and airport transfers can turn a slightly higher room rate into a better deal overall.
  7. Use a no-foreign-transaction-fee card. Those 3% fees add up on a week abroad. Pay in the local currency to avoid poor conversion rates at the register.
  8. Eat like a local. Enjoy your big meal at lunch, when many restaurants offer set menus at a fraction of dinner prices.
  9. Use public transportation. Many cities have fast, clean metro systems and multi-day passes that cost less than a single taxi ride across town.
  10. Work with a travel advisor. Agencies like ABT Global Travel have access to negotiated rates, hotel amenities and supplier relationships that aren’t available online, and we catch costly mistakes before they happen.

The Bottom Line

Saving money is about planning, not sacrifice. A few smart choices before you leave can free up budget for the experiences that matter most. Book a free consultation and we’ll find the savings for you.

Packing Essentials 101: Travel Light, Travel Prepared with ABT Global Travel

Carry-on backpack illustration

The best-traveled executives we work with share one habit: they pack light and they pack smart. Here is the carry-on system we recommend for trips of three days or three weeks.

Start with the Right Bag

Choose a carry-on roller or travel backpack that meets airline size limits and has a dedicated laptop compartment. A bag that opens flat like a suitcase makes it easy to stay organized.

Build a Capsule Wardrobe

Pick two or three base colors that all work together. With two pairs of trousers, four shirts and one blazer you can create a week of outfits. Choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics and wear your bulkiest items on the plane.

The Essentials Checklist

  • Passport, ID, visas and printed copies kept separately
  • Phone, laptop, chargers and a universal plug adapter
  • Travel-size toiletries in a clear quart bag
  • Prescription medications in their original containers
  • One pair of versatile walking shoes, plus the pair you wear
  • Noise-canceling headphones and an eye mask
  • A refillable water bottle and a few snacks

Pack Like a Pro

Roll soft items and use packing cubes to compress clothing and keep categories separate. Keep liquids and electronics where you can reach them for security checks. Leave a little room for anything you bring home.

Before You Zip It

Check the weather forecast, confirm your hotel has the amenities you’re counting on, and photograph your passport and itinerary. Your ABT Global Travel advisor can run through this list with you before you leave. Need gear? Browse our curated travel essentials.

The Most Exciting Destinations of 2026: ABT Global Travel Picks

Bicycle outside a yellow building in Southeast Asia

Every year our advisors keep track of where clients are going and where they come back happiest. These destinations mix world-class business access with memorable experiences, which makes them ideal for trips that combine business and leisure.

Tokyo & Kyoto, Japan

Efficient, safe and endlessly fascinating. Tokyo offers outstanding hotels and dining for business travelers, and Kyoto is a short bullet-train ride away for temples, gardens and traditional ryokan stays.

Lisbon & the Algarve, Portugal

Lisbon has become a hub for technology and conferences, with a mild climate and excellent value. Add a few days on the Algarve coast for golf, seafood and dramatic cliffs.

Hoi An & Hanoi, Vietnam

Lantern-lit streets, tailor shops and some of the best street food in the world. Hanoi’s energy pairs well with Hoi An’s slower pace and nearby beach resorts.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Design-forward, bike-friendly and focused on sustainability. Copenhagen is a great base for Scandinavian business meetings and an exciting dining destination.

Cape Town, South Africa

Mountains, oceans and wine country all within an hour. Pair a city stay with a safari lodge for a once-in-a-lifetime extension.

Closer to Home: Florida’s Gulf Coast

Right here near our Seminole office, the Gulf Coast offers beautiful beaches, waterfront resorts and easy access from Tampa International Airport, which makes it an excellent choice for corporate retreats.
